Leonard Garcia Gets Brown Belt in Gaidojitsu

WEC featherweight contender Leonard Garcia got a nice pre-Christmas present when he last arrived at Jackson's MMA in Albuquerque, New Mexico: a fresh brown belt.

To clarify, Garcia says it's a brown belt in jiu-jitsu. He had been a purple belt for one and a half years, and had all the stripes to prove it.

Clay Pittman, a third degree black belt under Carlos Machado, and Greg Jackson, founder of Jackson's MMA, awarded the advancement to Garcia.

"I had this big certificate waiting for me when I got there," Garcia said. "That was a real honor."

Garcia will definitely put his belt to the test should he face new WEC featherweight champ Mike Brown in 2009.

B.J. Penn Kicks Off Video Blog

"The Ultimate Fighter saved my career," says Tim Credeur

Tim Credeur almost stopped fighting before being tapped to be on The Ultimate Fighter.

"I don't know if I was going to quit fighting completely, but I hit 30 and I had been doing this a long time," he told MMAWeekly Radio recently.

"I didn't really see any foreseeable future in terms of me having to support my family. I was kind of in a situation where I was finishing school and it was time for me to get on it about the fight thing or do something else. I have a wife I love very much. Seeing someone you love going through all those trials and tribulations for you trying to follow your dream is kind of tough. I couldn't see myself making the sacrifices and her having to make it too anymore unless there was going to be some light at the end of the tunnel."

The Louisiana native took a few fights before submitting his application to The Ultimate Fighter for consideration. "I took a fight at the end of September with a guy who had 60 or 70 fights and I took a fight at the end of October on one of Rich Clementi's cards and I beat a pretty tough guy from EliteXC."

Luckily for the fans, Credeur was accepted to The Ultimate Fighter and made it to the semi-finals of season 7, losing to Jesse Taylor by decision. When Taylor was kicked off of the show, he came back and lost a unanimous decision to C.B. Dollaway. Credeur recently defeated Cale Yarbrough at UFC Fight Night 14.

"I sent my application in to The Ultimate Fighter and that was it. If I wasn't going to get in The Ultimate Fighter, I would have called it quits," he said. "Just because it was getting to be time where I could see it being the twilight of my career, and still fighting in small shows just wasn't an option for me anymore. I think The Ultimate Fighter saved my career. We'll see how it goes from here."

Credeur is currently preparing for a fight against Nate Loughran on Wednesday night at the UFC's Fight for the Troops on Spike TV.

"A Fight For Charity" Offers Up Free MMA on Dec. 19 in Atlanta

On Friday, Dec. 19 at Wild Bill's Fight Night in Atlanta, GA, the promoters will stage a completely FREE fight night to benefit charity in Atlanta. The event has been titled "A Fight For Charity."

All fight fans will receive free admission to the fights by simply donating a new toy. Drop off spots will be made available within days. They will include all MMA and kickboxing gyms in Atlanta as well as mainstream gyms and other locations.

"This has never been done before in Georgia and probably never before in the country," said David Oblas of Undisputed Productions. Oblas is co-promoting the charity fight night along with Steve Mudder and Amy Lynn of Full Throttle Entertainment.

"This is something that we've been planning for a long time and something that is very important to all of us. We anticipate raising more than 3,000 toys for charity. There are so many people that have already jumped on board to offer their assistance to this charity fight night on Friday, Dec 19 at Wild Bill's. This is going to be an absolutely remarkable event in Atlanta and will put the sport of MMA in the most positive light possible."

With tickets being free to the public, the promoters are encouraging companies to use this as a terrific opportunity for a company outing or a Holiday Party.

Oblas added, "This is a great idea for a company Holiday Party that will cost you absolutely nothing! Have your company donate 100 new toys and we'll give you 100 free fight tickets. It's that easy! And your donated toys will be going to charity! I can't think of a better scenario than that. In a time of economic hardship this is the perfect Holiday Party for all companies!"

For companies interested in sponsoring the charity fight night on Friday, Dec 19 at Wild Bill's or donating bulk toys, please call the Fight Hotline at 404-626-2126 or reply to this email.

"This charity fight night will have 4,000 plus fans packed inside Wild Bill's on Friday, Dec 19. This charity fight night will be one of the largest single day charity events in Atlanta, I guarantee you that. Many more details will be released later, but we haven't even scratched the surface with this event," said Oblas. "This is a perfect opportunity for companies to sponsor a high profile event during the Holiday season."

Torres Says Curran Should Get a Shot... but Bowles Should Be First

"Jeff Curran, he's a good fighter. He's been fighting longer than me. He's been in this sport for a long time. Me and him have a lot of similar qualities in our fighting style. I think a fight with him is going to be inevitable," says current WEC bantamweight champ Miguel Torres.

"We were supposed to fight in my hometown a couple of times, and for whatever reason, it never worked out. I think one time I tore my ACL. Then he went up in weight. And we never got to match up again. Now he's come back to 135. I'd be glad to fight him someday."

Just not right now says Torres, who feels that Brian Bowles, with his recent win over Will Ribeiro, has earned it more than Curran.

"I think Brian Bowles went out in the 135s and has proven himself more than anybody. Jeff Curran called me out, talking some smack. He's just trying to get a fight without having to work for it. I see a lot of what Brian does... he wants his time; I think it's his time to get a shot."

To be sure though, Torres is not in any way writing off a future bout with Curran. In fact, it's one he feels has to happen, and he's got the local nailed down, as well.

"It's going to have to happen in Chicago... It's going to have to happen for sure. And I think Chicago would be the prefect venue. He has a huge following. He has a huge gym. I have a huge following in my hometown. It would sell out for sure, easily."

But for now, the No. 1 bantamweight fighter in the world feels it's Bowles' turn for a crack at his title.

FOX News Fight Game Talks Affliction with Tom Atencio

Krzysztof Soszynski Says Boredom Gave Way To The Pranks On TUF 8

The most recent season of the "Ultimate Fighter" saw some of the most elaborate pranks ever played on the show and most of them were courtesy of Team Quest fighter, Krzysztof Soszynski, and his bag of tricks.

The fighter recently told MMAWeekly about the secret where he came up with all the ideas for the pranks on the show.

"I was just bored," Soszynski said. "It was so boring in that house, it was all about boredom. It was just my way to release the stress and the boredom. Other guys got into the boos, other guys got into the pee drinking, none of that stuff is what I like to do. So it was just a way to release some boredom."

During the one hour show each week, fans see the random house activity along with training footage and of course the fight, but what people don't regularly see is all the other time that fighters are left with when the training is done for the day.

"20 hours of downtime for six straight weeks, it was just so boring in there that it was just one of my ways of releasing that," he said about the pranks. "They just came to me. Some of them were fun, some of them were dumb, some of them were stupid, some of them were childish, but hey I got through it, I got through the 6 weeks and I was happy with it."

Soszynski said one prank that didn't end up getting played was actually trapping a fighter in their room, but he says the Spike producers wouldn't allow them to go that far as the door being locked would have been seen as a fire hazard so they had to put a nix on that idea.

What's Up With the Miguel Torres Tumbling Routine?

As mixed martial arts has developed into a combat style in and of itself, we typically see fewer obscure techniques in fights that are usually associated with a specific traditional martial arts discipline. There are a few exceptions though.

One such recent exception was Miguel Torres' forward roll combined with an axe kick. He used the technique, which he dubs the "suicide kick," in his latest title defense, against Manny Tapia at WEC 37 on Wednesday night.

"The suicide kick? I have a lot of tricks in my bag. My coach hates it when I do stuff like that. It's real high risk," Torres commented about the technique after the fight.

"I think it was after a left that I caught him with, he was a little bit stunned when I went for it. I think I barely missed him. Right after the kick, he kind of smiled at me and was like, 'that was a nice kick.'"

But it's not even that Torres necessarily intended to land the kick. As he explained, "I do that kick sometimes to bait the guy to come into my guard, so I can do the up-kick or a leg lock or something. He was pretty savvy about getting away."

So there you have it... the Miguel Torres suicide kick.

Cung Le Featured on Saturday's Strikeforce on NBC

PRESS RELEASE:

Strikeforce World Middleweight (185 lb. limit) Champion, Cung Le, will seize the spotlight during an all-new "Strikeforce on NBC" episode on Saturday night.

The special, 30-minute program, devoted entirely to the one-of-a-kind knockout artist, will showcase Le's stoppages of Mike Altman and "Mr. Unbreakable" Brian Warren and will revisit his crushing knockouts of "The Ultimate Fighter" season three veteran, Sam "The Squeeze" Morgan, and Tony "The Freak" Fryklund.

Also included in the show is a feature segment that touches on the personal life of Le, who fled a war-torn Vietnam, just days before the fall of Saigon, as a baby in his mother's arms in 1975.

Le's victories over Altman and Warren were ranked number one and two, respectively, according to the results of an online poll that gave fans the opportunity to vote for their all-time favorite Strikeforce knockout on the promotion's official website, www.strikeforce.com, last week.

A former junior college and high school wrestling star, Le has pioneered the Chinese stand-up fighting art of San Shou, which aided his run to a perfect 16-0 record in the sport of professional kickboxing and an International Kickboxing Federation (IKF) world championship. His kickboxing conquests, which included three victories in K-1 North America "Superfights," have aired repeatedly on ESPN and ESPN2.

Two years after making his highly-anticipated mixed martial arts (MMA) debut, Le notched what is undoubtedly the greatest win of his career - a third round TKO of former UFC middleweight champion and MMA legend, Frank Shamrock on March 29th of this year. The live SHOWTIME televised victory earned Le the Strikeforce middleweight crown.

Le recently returned home from a two month stay in Berlin, where he completed his third acting stint for the silver screen, a supporting role in the science fiction thriller, "Pandorum," which co-stars award-winning actors Dennis Quaid and Ben Foster (3:10 to Yuma, Alpha Dog). The film is slated for release next fall.

"Strikeforce on NBC," the first 52-week mixed martial arts series in network television history, airs every Saturday, immediately following NBC's hit poker tournament series, "Poker After Dark" (check local listings). MMA legend Ken Shamrock and award-winning ESPN announcer, Lon McEachern, co-host each program and provide expert, play-by-play commentary.

Trigg's wife, Nici, has gone back to work and with their conflicting work schedules, the Trigg family is looking to hire a nanny. "We're in the process of hiring a nanny full-time. That's one of the things that we have to do next," Trigg told MMAInsider Blog. "Nic and I have such opposite schedules. We have a lot of stuff to do all the time, so you have to have somebody here to kind of help out with the kid."

" You have to be able to speak two languages. You have to be educated," said Trigg. "And you have to take child psychology and child CPR classes to qualify."

Proud Papa Alberto Crane Heading Back to the Cage

Alberto Crane had a lot to be thankful for this year. Just two days prior to the Thanksgiving holiday, Crane's wife gave birth to twin daughters. The proud papa now has three little ones. In addition to recently added twins Sona and Serineh, the Crane household already included 18-month-old son Sevan.

Not only has Crane been busy... umm... at home. He's also been busy working on his career, as well.

"(I'm) fighting Saturday, Dec. 6, at a King of the Cage in Albuquerque at Isleta Casino against a last minute replacement," Crane told MMAInsider.

The win would extend Crane's latest winning streak to three. He started his career 8-0 before dropping back-to-back bouts in the UFC and another at UWC following his exit from the Octagon. A win on Saturday night would be good momentum for the next step in his professional career.

"I'm also opening up a school in L.A. this next month," said Crane. "It was going to be Dec. 15, but looks more like Jan. 5."

Although he's lately been out of the spotlight that shines on the Octagon, Crane has been a busy man, looking to work his way back to the top.

WEC 38 Official - Faber Returns, Varner Defends in San Diego

PRESS RELEASE:

Las Vegas, NV (USA) – World Extreme Cagefighting® today announced that for the first event of 2009, the cage will head west to the hotbed of mixed martial arts - California - to hold the first ever WEC® event in San Diego. Two blockbuster matchups will lead the main card, with the World Lightweight Championship fight between Jamie Varner and undefeated Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone as the main event, and the mega-rematch pitting Urijah Faber against Jens Pulver in the co-main event. World Extreme Cagefighting, featuring Varner vs. Cerrone and Faber vs. Pulver 2, takes place live from the San Diego Sports Arena on Sunday, January 25, 2009.

World Extreme Cagefighting will be televised live nationally on VERSUS beginning at 9:30 pm ET/6:30 pm PT. All live WEC events will be presented in Hi-Definition (HD) where available. For more information and how to find VERSUS in your local viewing area, visit http://www.versus.com/findversus.

Tickets for World Extreme Cagefighting go on sale at 10 a.m. PT Thursday, Dec. 4 and will be priced at $175, $125, $75 and $35 (not including applicable services or taxes). Tickets will be available for purchase through the San Diego Sports Arena Box Office, online at www.ticketmaster.com or by calling Ticketmaster at 619-220-8497.

Don't blink when WEC lightweight champion Jamie Varner (15-2, 1 NC) meets up with No. 1 contender Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone (9-0, 1 NC). Varner has finished his last four opponents, and now the Tempe, Arizona fighter will face his greatest test in the red hot Cerrone.

"I have a lot of respect for Cerrone, but I consider him just one more undefeated fighter that I have to put in his place," said Varner. "I think it's awesome to have this fight in Southern California; there is a huge MMA following there, so I think this event will be huge, and a big step for the growth of WEC."

Undefeated lightweight contender Cerrone ( 9-0,1 No Contest) is one fight away from securing his place as the new champion of the WEC, and he plans on doing everything in his power to get there. The Albuquerque, New Mexico trained mixed martial artist, who is known for his relentless stand-up attack and equally effective ground game, most recently scored a Fight of the Night win against world class striker and former champ "Razor" Rob McCullough.

"I'm excited for the opportunity to fight for the title, and to take on Jamie Varner," said Cerrone. "He's well rounded and very athletic, but I'm going to work hard in training camp and on my game plan to win the title. I'm looking forward to fighting in San Diego, and to headline the first WEC event there."

Urijah "The California Kid" Faber (21-2) is the former WEC Featherweight Champion, a title he has owned since March of 2006. Faber was upset by Mike Brown in November, but he is on a mission to reclaim his status as best featherweight fighter in the world. But first, he has to fight his way through a rematch with Jens Pulver. The two first met in June 2008, fighting toe-to-toe in a five round battle that became one of the best WEC fights to date.

"I know this is going to be another classic for the fans," said Faber. "Jens is always ready to fight, he's a competitor, and I expect a tough battle, but I'm going to try to finish it this time - I don't want it to go the distance."

Former UFC® lightweight champion Jens Pulver (22-10-1) looks to rebound from two consecutive losses at the expense of Faber. And with a new team behind him, the 33-year-old with the legendary left hand is refocused and ready to continue on his road back to the top.

"Now that I train with Matt Hume, I'll be doing things a lot differently," Pulver said comparing his first fight with Faber. "Did I show it against Leonard Garcia? No, it takes time. But I know I'm still competitive... Great fights are still in me."

All bouts subject to change. For more information about current WEC fight news, visit www.wec.tv.

Gina Carano Headed to WEC? Not so fast....

Although UFC president Dana White has recently made public comments that he would be willing to entertain the prospect of former EliteXC star Gina Carano competing in the Octagon, it's not the Ultimate Fighting Championship he's talking about.

White said that he's not ready to put women's fights in the UFC, but he would give Carano a run in the UFC's sister promotion, the WEC.

"I heard that," confirmed WEC vice president Peter Dropick on Monday.

There's still a hang-up in having Carano fight even in the WEC.

"First off, I don't know if anyone knows really what the contractual situation is with any fighter from those other organizations," he said, referring to ProElite-owned promotions like EliteXC. "I think until that is flushed out, we would... we really don't have anything at this point."

That's not to say that Dropick isn't interested. On the contrary, he's very interested in adding more talent - including Carano - to the WEC's roster of athletes. "We'd be open to having some of the better fighters and the most exciting fights. (Carano) is certainly a star and she certainly has drawing power. So, we'll see how that plays out."

For now, like many EliteXC fighters, Carano is in limbo, trying to figure out just what her contractual status is while ProElite keeps toying with the idea of whether it will continue on or not.

WEC Start Time At 8pm EST On Versus

Just a reminder that the World Extreme Cagefighting event this Wednesday night in Las Vegas will start the live broadcast on Versus at 8pm EST/5pm PST.

This is the same time as the last show, but some cable systems did not catch up in time and the listing was incorrect.

The main event for the show will pit #1 bantamweight, Miguel Torres, defending his title against Manny Tapia.

The undercard televised fights will be a showcase of the lighter weight classes, as two top featherweights, Wagnney Fabiano and Akitoshi Tamura, square off as well as bantamweight fights as Brian Bowles faces Will Ribeiro and Joseph Benavidez against Danny Martinez.

The Current Cost Of Pro Elite Freedom

According to a manager with multiple fighters under the ProElite banner, the dormant company is now making it all but impossible for its signees to work elsewhere.

Early in the saga of the marooned fighters, ProElite sent managers a notice requiring written permission from the company to place their clients in another promotion. Now, a few new requirements have been added.

In addition to written consent, fighter reps must provide ProElite with video footage of their outside fight. The fighter must also be identified as a "ProElite fighter" in their appearance.

Ever looming in the manager's attempt to keep his fighters working is the threat of "injunctive relief" by ProElite, or a court order preventing them from fighting elsewhere.

Amongst the managers and industry vets MMAInsider spoke to, confusion is still the norm on the status of the Los Angeles-based company.

On a side note, the manager also stated that fledgling promotion Art of War is out of the running as the new investor for ProElite due to lack of funds.

Aerts the Favorite at K-1 World GP 2008 Final

PRESS RELEASE:

TOKYO, December 1, 2008 -- In the book "Principles and Practice of Sports Management," University of Massachusetts Professor Lisa P. Masteralexis estimates the career of a professional athlete at less than five years. Apparently, Dutch kickboxer Peter Aerts has not read that book.

Aerts, 38, has participated in each and every K-1 World Grand Prix Final in a glorious career spanning the sport's 16 year history. The "Dutch Lumberjack" has taken the crown three times, and in Yokohama on December 6, will endeavor to do it again. Incredibly, Aerts is not coming into the grueling eight-man elimination tournament as a nostalgic icon, but as the clear favorite -- a position he cemented by eliminating 2007 World GP Champion Semmy Schilt at the September 27 Final-16 tournament in Seoul.

The K-1 World GP Final is the world's most prestigious fightsport event. Culminating 12 months of qualifying and regional elimination tournaments, it kicks off with the year's top eight fighters clashing in quarterfinal bouts. Winners there advance to the semis, from which a pair of warriors emerge for the final showdown, the victor earning the K-1 World GP Championship.

In advance of the event -- which will be broadcast live on five continents -- we circumnavigated the globe to get the predictions of international sportswriters and K-1 experts.

The first quarterfinal matchup pits Aerts against K-1 Heavyweight Champion Badr Hari. Many believe Aerts' toughest challenge of the night will be getting past the 23 year-old Moroccan dynamo.

"The first match will be crucial for the tournament, says Jeroen Winters of Holland's Mat Magazine. "But the 'Old Master' Aerts is in great shape and will never allow a 'newcomer' like Hari to keep him from his 4th title."

"The favorite is clearly Peter Aerts," says Alexis Del Castillo of Spain's K-1Fans. "Aerts was the only fighter able to defeat Semmy Schilt and he is again at one of the best moments in his K-1 career."

"Peter Aerts has an 80 % chance to win against Hari," says Kasra Ashhami of K-1 Scandinavia. "Aerts is too experienced, heavy and strong for Hari, an upcoming fighter who could be tomorrow's champ but is still not strong enough and not heavy enough to defeat an opponent such as Aerts today. If Peter is not inured after the semifinals, he will win the Grand Prix for the 4th time!"

"Taking out the defending champion Semmy Schilt is one of the top stories in combat sports this year," says California-based 'Webmaster Gumby' of Brazil's On The Mat. "If Peter Aerts manages to win the K-1 Final this year it would truly make him a legend." Of a similar mind is Brazilian sportswriter Marcelo Estrella, who predicts Aerts will KO Hari and go on to also win the final by KO.

The concentration of talent in the first quarterfinal was emphasized in many of our experts' predictions, and reflected by Hari finishing second in the straw poll.

"As Hari himself has mentioned he has the 'best scenario' for this year’s championship, at least if he can get past Aerts." says Jens Habermann of Germany's K-1sport. "Although Aerts has experience and strength on his side I choose Hari as he's had the more convincing fights this year, with KO victories over Feitosa and Sefo, and also because of his youth and technique. I predict that Hari's going all the way this year."

Marko Gyllenland, editor-in-chief of Sweden's Fighter Magazine, concurs. "Hari has evolved as a fighter, he can win this bout by decision and continue through to win the championship."

Takao Matsui, who writes for the martial arts magazine Kakutogi Tsushin, is one of more than a few Japanese sportswriters picking the Moroccan. "Hari's speed, technique and aggressiveness are his big weapons," says Matsui. "I believe he'll beat Aerts and go on to become the new champion."

The second tournament quarterfinal pits 22 year-old Surinamese-Dutch kickboxer Errol Zimmerman against 26-year-old kyokushin karateka Ewerton Teixeira of Brazil. Most respondents have Zimmerman taking this bout, and although none figure either fighter will go all the way, Gyllenland pegs Zimmerman as the dark horse; while Stuart Tonkin of Japan's Kakutogi website and Australia-based K-1 television commentator Michael Schiavello do the same for Teixeira.

The next matchup is between a couple of go-to kickboxers -- Gokhan Saki of Turkey and Ruslan Karaev of Russia.

"I wouldn't be surprised to see Karaev take the upset tournament victory," says Andreas Bruzelius, also weighing in from Sweden's Fighter Magazine. "This year has been amazing for Karaev, he still takes a lot of risks, and leaves himself unprotected at times, however his timing and precision are better then ever, and with the power in his punches, he's a hard man to stop."

Karaev also picks up a dark horse vote from Ashhami.

Saki, meanwhile, has captured the imagination of our experts. Del Castillo, Winters and Mark "Hammer" Castagnini of Australia's International Kickboxer Magazine all select Saki as their dark horse; while Fred Varcoe of Japan's Metropolis Magazine exudes even more confidence in the young Turk's chances.

"Saki fights to win," says Varcoe. "Karaev is good at taking punishment, but there are limits. I think Saki will win the tournament, he just seems to have too much firepower: he's got the skills, the focus, the desire, tactical awareness and the knockout punch."

The last of the quarterfinals features two-time K-1 World GP Champion Remy Bonjasky of Holland and French veteran Jerome LeBanner. After Aerts and Hari, Bonjasky and LeBanner finished best in our experts' survey, making this another critical contest.

"This is Remy's fight," says Schiavello. "He has too many tools, he is too quick and his work rate is too consistent. Look for Bonjasky to outscore LeBanner. He has a new lease on his fighting life and the prerequisites for success are all aligned for him: physically in shape, mentally ready and a new hot girlfriend to hang off his shoulder alongside the Grand Prix belt! He hardly ever loses, his defense is tighter than Fort Knox, he moves like a middleweight and his workrate is the highest of any fighter in the top eight. The winner of the GP will be Remy Bonjasky."

"Bonjasky has proven time and time again that he is just about impossible to hurt -- unless you go for the family jewels that is" says Tonkin. "He also manages to win just about every judges' decision he fights to, so unless LeBanner manages to put him away early in the first fight, it is going to be very tough to beat him."

"Bonjasky has put a recent slump behind him and should edge past LeBanner," says Tim Leidecker of Germany's GroundAndPound. "I think Bonjasky and Aerts are poised to meet in the final, with the "Flying Gentleman" getting revenge for last year's semifinal exit at the hands and feet of Aerts, to win his third K-1 World GP Final."

Castagnini sees it another way: "LeBanner very hungry and aggressive and based on Bonjasky's last performance, LeBanner should be too strong. Could this be Jerome's year?"

According to Brice Hoarau of France's MuayThaiTV, it definitely is: "I think this could be 'LeBanner Time'! Not because he's a better fighter, not because he has more power, not because his skills are better -- because objectively Bonjasky is the best technician in the tournament. It will be 'LeBanner Time' only because he wants it more! In Aerts' bracket I don't think the finalist will finish two fights without injuries, but if LeBanner fights in the final he will be at 130%! His iron mind will give him the victory this year!"

And there we have it. Significant support for Hari, Bonjasky and LeBanner, but a clear majority predicting the indefatigable veteran Peter Aerts will battle through the field to victory in the K-1 World Grand Prix 2008 Final.

Also strongly in Aerts' favor is an ongoing fan poll on the K-1 Japanese Website. At time of writing, Aerts has garnered a commanding 47% of votes for pick to win; while Bonjasky, LeBanner and Hari trail with 13-15% each and the other four hopefuls share the remaining 10%.

But no matter how many dozens of sportswriters or thousands of fans believe Aerts will win the K-1 World GP; there remain seven men possessed of very different opinions. And at the Yokohama Arena on December 6, those seven men will lace up their gloves and step into the ring determined to prove a lot of people wrong.

Franklin vs. Henderson Originally Set For UFC 88

The upcoming fight between Dan Henderson and Rich Franklin at light heavyweight was not, it appears, an original idea for UFC matchmaker Joe Silva.

According to a source from Henderson's camp who asked to remain anonymous, Henderson originally accepted an offer to fight against Franklin at UFC 88 on Sept. 6 in Atlanta, Georgia, but was later told Franklin's camp turned the fight down.

At the time, Henderson was coming off a loss to Anderson Silva at UFC 82, while Franklin had last defeated Travis Lutter at UFC 83. Both were at crossroads in their respective careers due to middleweight Anderson Silva's dominance, and had been suggested for the light heavyweight division (Henderson's suggestions had been far more frequent).

Franklin ended up fighting Matt Hamill in the co-main event of UFC 88, while Henderson was slotted one fight before against jiu-jitsu ace Rousimar Palhares in a middleweight showcase.

Franklin's light heavyweight return was successful, no doubt leading the UFC to push for a main event meeting at UFC 93.

The two lend much-needed star power to the UFC's second trip to Ireland. Historically, events held abroad draw lower pay per view buyrates for the Las Vegas-based organization. In the end, the timing might have been just right.

Next Strikeforce Expected in 1st Quarter 2009

MMAInsider recently caught up with Strikeforce executive Mike Afromowitz to check in on the promotion's plans for 2009.

A rumored match-up between Duane "Bang" Ludwig and Phil Baroni at welterweight is currently in the San Jose-based promotion's sights. Afromowitz said the date and details are currently being ironed out, but said it's "definitely a fight we'd like to put together."

Apparently, the wave of Japanese fighters that graced the promotion in late 2008 are MIA. Asked whether a long-rumored meeting between Josh Thomson and Caol Uno would ever materialize, Afromowitz responded, "I don't know." The promotion hopes to bring back fighters Mitsuhiro Ishida and Kazuo Misaki in 2009, but needs to ink the date for their next card before lining up talent.

Speaking of the next card, Afromowitz said the promotion will be in San Jose in "the first quarter of 2009," and may feature the return of Cung Le. Le is currently knee-deep in a film career, taking meetings in Los Angeles for a variety of film projects. Word on the street is that Le was extremely impressive in a recent project entitled "Pandorum," currently in post production and co-starring Ben Foster and Dennis Quaid.

Afromowitz said he's also more than willing to bring Kim Couture back to the promotion. Despite internet criticism at the one-sided outcome of her fight with Lina Kvokov, Afromowitz defended the decision to bring Couture in and said it was not a favor to Andrew Simon of HDNet Fights.

"Kim is obviously very marketable, because her husband is one of the most accomplished fighters in the history of MMA," Afromowitz said. "So we figured we'd give it a shot because she'd been training with a guy we promoted for years, Ray Sefo. We want to bring in marketable women. You don't get anywhere unless you take chances; a certain kind of chances."
