Nate Loughran Opts Out of UFC; More Outs Likely

Nate Loughran, who trains at the NorCal Fighting Alliance with Dave Terrell, has been granted his release from the Ultimate Fighting Championship. According to manager Tom Call, the separation was amicable.

"Nate is going to drop to the 170-pound division (he was competing at 185 pounds) and is going to take a couple of fights in smaller show," said Call. "If successful, we expect him back in the UFC."

Loughran currently has a 1-1 record in the UFC, but is 9-1 overall as a professional. After defeating little known Johnny Rees in his Octagon debut, Loughran most recently dropped a TKO loss due to injury in a bout with Tim Credeur. His suffered from a broken rib that was slightly dislocated, as well as some cartilage damage from the bout.

"(There were) absolutely no bad feelings. Nate was treated extremely fair (by the UFC)," added Call. "I would expect Nate to be ready to fight in July or August."

It's really no surprise that the UFC would be willing to work with some of its fighters to negotiate at least a temporary release. At last count the Zuffa (the UFC's parent company) had some 250 odd fighters under contract. Even if Zuffa put 12 bouts (or 24 fighters) on every fight card, it would take more than 10 events to get every fighter on the roster just one fight.

With most fighters signed to multi-fight per year deals, that makes it very difficult to get everyone the necessary amount of fights their contracts require. So don't be surprised if you see more fighters negotiating out of contracts or being out and out cut, especially following a loss or two.

Showtime Announces Strikeforce Broadcast Team

PRESS RELEASE:

The SHOWTIME Mixed Martial Arts announce team, led by play-by-play broadcast veteran Gus Johnson, Mixed Martial Arts experts Mauro Ranallo and Stephen Quadros and MMA legends Frank Shamrock and Pat Miletich will combine to create one of the most experienced and versatile groups in the history of the sport. The announcement was made today by Ken Hershman, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Sports & Event Programming, SHOWTIME, at a Los Angeles press conference kicking off the premium network's new relationship with leading MMA promoter Strikeforce.

The group will work in various combinations on both Strikeforce championship telecasts and on the yet to be named up-and-comers' series.

"I am thrilled with the announce team we've assembled," said Hershman. "The depth of talent, in terms of professional fight experience and live broadcast polish, is unmatched in the industry.

"As the first premium television network to regularly deliver live MMA events, SHOWTIME has taken the lead in presenting the sport with the respect and integrity it deserves. We take pride in delivering unparalleled coverage of this dynamic sport. And now, our broadcast team is unparalleled as well."

Gus Johnson
Johnson will be the lead play-by-play announcer and host for the Strikeforce telecasts on SHOWTIME, beginning with the first live event on April 11 (10 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the west coast) that features Frank Shamrock against Nick Diaz in the main event of a five-fight telecast. The versatile Johnson will be joined on April 11 by analysts Ranallo and Miletich.

A practicing mixed martial artist who studies Shing Yi Kung Fu, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and boxing, Johnson joined SHOWTIME Sports in January 2009 as the lead play-by-play announcer on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING. In addition, Johnson continues his work with CBS Sports as play-by-play announcer for the network's coverage of the NCAA Men's College Basketball Championships (since 1995) and the National Football League (since 1998).

"This is a great opportunity to be part of the most rapidly growing sport in America," said Johnson. "MMA is a sport that, in a few years, can become one of the most dominant sports in the country because the kids love it. I think MMA is going to continue to flourish and SHOWTIME is the perfect network to foster its development on television.

"I don't think there's a better team out there that can deliver the intensity of the moment while entertaining the core MMA fan and enlightening new comers.

Johnson, who called boxing for CBS Sports and Madison Square Garden Network, was the voice of CBS ELITEXC SATURDAY NIGHT FIGHTS in 2008. He continues as an active member of the CBS Sports broadcast team.

Mauro Ranallo
Always quick with a quip, the renowned Ranallo will lead the play-by-play duties on the up-and-comers' series.

The colorful Canadian previously worked blow-by-blow for EliteXC and ShoXC telecasts on SHOWTIME and was an analyst on CBS ELITEXC SATURDAY NIGHT FIGHTS. From 2003-2006, he has provided play-by-play for pay-per-view broadcasts of Japan's legendary Pride Fighting Championships into the North American marketplace.

"I am very excited to be a part of the new SHOWTIME team," said Ranallo, who also is the current lead anchor of the Fight Network, host of Fight Network Radio on Sirius/XM 98 and host of "The MMA Show" on the SCORE Network in Canada. "MMA is the purest form of competition featuring the greatest athletes in the world and I look forward to working with a very talented crew in providing the soundtrack for what I know will be some amazing fights."

Stephen Quadros
Known throughout the world as "The Fight Professor," Quadros has been involved in the martial arts for decades. He was the editor of two fight magazines, trained competitors in both kickboxing and MMA and has an extensive broadcasting resume that includes Pride Fighting Championships, K-1, the International Fight League and ShoXC on SHOWTIME.

As an actor, the talented Quadros has had guest roles on numerous TV shows, including "C.S.I. Miami" and "Without A Trace." Quadros was a guest lead when he fought Chuck Norris on the season premiere of "Walker, Texas Ranger."

On the other side of the camera, Quadros functioned as fight technical advisor for two films for Warner Bros. ("Exit Wounds," "Cradle 2 The Grave").

"To me, working in the MMA industry has always been a great job," the respected Quadros said. "So far I've been very fortunate to have been around the world, commentating on the best fighters and the best contests.

"But now with the partnership between Strikeforce and SHOWTIME, two of the most professional and enduring entities in the modern sports world, my confidence is at an all-time high.

"It's a dream come true to be aboard a venture of this magnitude alongside people who I hold in the highest regard. Let the games begin."

Frank Shamrock
If he had his way, Shamrock, who also was an analyst on CBS ELITEXC SATURDAY NIGHT FIGHTS, would fight and commentate on April 11.

Arguably the most physically gifted individual to step in the cage, Shamrock has been dubbed by the press as the "closest thing mixed martial has to Muhammad Ali" for his combination of versatile skills and quick-witted mind games he has so often used to gain a sharp advantage over his opposition.

During an illustrious career, Shamrock has taken out the likes of former UFC poster boy Tito Ortiz as well as MMA legend, Bas Rutten. His 16-second submission of former Olympic gold medalist Kevin Jackson on Dec. 21, 1997 set a UFC record for stoppage of a fight.

"Great coaching and dedication to my art has allowed me to accomplish extraordinary things in my 15-year career," said Shamrock, who has held multiple world titles and records. "At 36-years old, I feel that the greatest opponent facing me in the cage is Father Time. My work as a fighter is far from over, and on April 11, you'll all see that.

"But one of my dreams has always been to work behind the mic as a sports analyst and to share my passion for martial arts with the world. I am honored to be part of the SHOWTIME announce team. These guys are, in my opinion, the best team in sports television. Under the guidance of Executive Producer David Dinkins, Jr., and my mentor Al Bernstein, I am confident that I can provide championship commentary for a great many years to come."

Pat Miletich
Miletich is the founder of Miletich Fighting Systems, a premier MMA training academy in Bettendorf, Iowa, which includes amongst its trainees some of the most talented and popular fighters in MMA, including former Icon Sport and EliteXC champion Robbie Lawler.

Known as "The Croatian Sensation," Miletich has been fighting professionally since 1995. Last year, he returned from a two-year layoff to knock out Thomas Denny in the second round (December, 2008). Miletich holds a third degree black belt in Shuri-ryu karate and has trained with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt Sergio Monteiro, earning his BJJ black belt from Oswaldo Alves.

"I am very excited to be part of the SHOWTIME team," said Miletich. "I know Scott Coker very well and he and his Strikeforce outfit have been putting on quality fights for a long time. Strikeforce and SHOWTIME are a terrific match and I am looking forward to contributing in every way that I can."

Over the years, Miletich has served as guest commentator on Fox Sports Net and HDNet among others.

"I feel very comfortable in front of the camera," he continued. "It's going to be fun to be a regular part of the on-air team on such a high-profile show. The key for me is the support system. With guys like Gus Johnson and Mauro Ranallo quarterbacking the commentary, it's going to be very natural for me."

One of the most likable fighters in the sport, Miletich is the Vice President of Fighter Relations for the World Alliance of Mixed Martial Arts.

ESPN's MMA Live Breaks Down UFC 96 "Jackson vs. Jardine"

Florida State Boxing Commission Will Honor Shamrock Suspension

There will be no "March Badness" for Ken Shamrock.

The 45 year-old UFC Hall of Famer tested positive for three different types of steroids on Wednesday, drawing a yearlong suspension from the California State Athletic Commission and a $2500 fine.

Shamrock was scheduled to fight former WWE star Bobby Lashley on March 21 in Pensacola, Fla., on the Roy Jones Jr. boxing/MMA hybrid "March Badness."

But according to Alexis Antonacci, press secretary for the Florida State Boxing Commission, which oversees Jones Jr.'s event, Shamrock will not be licensed to fight.

"We will honor the suspension," Antonacci said of CSAC's decision. "We honor all states suspensions."

No word has been given yet on whether Shamrock will fight CSAC's suspension, though Shamrock's lawyer, Rod Donohoo, blamed the positive test on over the counter supplements, speaking to Sherdog.com.

UFC 99 in Germany To Be U.S. PPV Event

The UFC's German invasion has shaped up quickly, with the bulk of the June 13 fighters confirmed in less than a month.

More than half the fighters on the card are either foreign-born or based outside the US, with one fighter, Peter Sobotta, bringing in the hometown crowd as a resident of Balingen, only 272 miles, or 438 kilometers, from the 20,000 seat Lanxess Arena in Cologne.

The UFC recently inked a deal with German sports network DSF to air UFC content, including live or tape-delayed events.

At the festivities for UFC 96 last weekend, UFC president Dana White said the European card would come at a premium for those watching in the US.

"It will be a pay per view event," White told reporters.

In past overseas events, the time difference has not been friendly to pay per view buyrates. So far, none of the Europe based pay events have cracked the 300,000 range. While by no means are those slim numbers, and the promotion has done extremely well in live attendance numbers, there appeared to be a push towards airing the events free for Spike TV viewers. UFC 99 appears to be a break from that strategy.

So far, the only official bout on the card is the main event, between Rich Franklin and Wanderlei Silva at a catch weight of 195lbs. Tickets for the event go on sale to the public in three days.

Slice Manager Says Kimbo Still on Ice

Icy Mike, a.k.a. Mike Imber, says details of Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson's new deal with Strikeforce continue to hold the fighter back from a possible May booking.

Communicating with MMAInsider via text, Slice's manager said things were still being ironed out with the San Jose-based promotion.

"It's really tough to say at this point," wrote Imber. "We've gotta sort out details before any (fights)."

Ferguson's contract was one of forty-two picked up from ProElite by Strikeforce, which begins its new relationship with Showtime on April 11 with "Shamrock vs. Diaz."

After the buyout, reports surfaced that Imber was looking for a fight overseas, but nothing materialized.

Last month, CEO Scott Coker told MMAInsider he believed Slice and Carano were under the Strikeforce banner and a "business remedy or legal remedy" would come out of the transfer. Negotiations with Ferguson's lawyer were ongoing, he noted.

Along with Gina Carano, Ferguson remains as one of the most bankable assets not locked down by the expanding promotion.

Reffing Controversies Go To Extremes at UFC 96

There were two fights at UFC 96 on Saturday night in Columbus, Ohio, that took to extremes two of the most debated issues in refereeing in mixed martial arts: stopping fights too early and stopping fights too late.

The night's opening bout -- between Shane Nelson and Aaron Riley -- was widely believed to have been stopped well before it should have. Riley was knocked down, but was already back into the fight before the referee stepped in.

In the case of Pete Sell and Matt Brown, the referee stepped in to stop the fight, appeared to have a change of heart once the fighters were already separated and stopping action, then inexplicably restarted the fight. What followed was what made it a much harder situation to swallow. Sell was clearly in another dimension for most of the rest of the fight, being battered around the cage, with Brown practically begging Yves Lavigne to stop the fight before he finally called a halt to the brutality.

"You've heard me so many times, especially in the last few weeks – wait until The Ultimate Fighter comes out – talking about reffing and judging; it's one of the hardest things in this sport right now. It drives me crazy," said UFC president Dana White at the UFC 96 post-fight press conference.

"Yves Lavigne is usually a very good referee. I hurt my arm tonight, beating on the Octagon screaming to stop that fight. I've never done that in eight years. I don't even know what to say."

There are definitely good referee's in this sport, but White pointed out a difference between those at the top, and those that just aren't quite getting it done.

"I think when they see a guy make a mistake, that it was a brutal mistake, like in the (Shane Nelson vs. Aaron Riley) fight, it messes with their head. And they think, 'I don't want to do that.' I think these guys just need to be confident and go in and make decisions. Stop the fight. If that's your decision, let them boo you. Who cares? You're the boss," he said, citing the lack of decision making among many officials.

He went on. "There's nobody, I shouldn't say nobody. There's a couple of guys out there that are real good. There's a whole bunch of guys that aren't.

"Yves Lavigne usually does a good job. The fight tonight was horrible. I think Herb Dean is great. Mario Yamasaki is good."

Recession Resistant, UFC Pulls Solid Numbers in Columbus

The UFC rolled into Columbus, Ohio this week to make its third straight stop on the same weekend as the Arnold Sports Festival.

UFC 96, headlined by a bout pitting former UFC light heavyweight champ Quinton Jackson against Jackson's MMA fighter Keith Jardine, was another resounding success. Attendance for UFC 96 was announced at the post-fight press conference to be 17,033, accounting for a gate of $1.8 million.

UFC president Dana White recounted that he heard on a Columbus radio station that between the Arnold's and the UFC being in town, they brought in an estimated $41 million to the capitol city.

"These hard economic times and doing a huge number like that. I know we're going to do it in Montreal, and everywhere else we go," said White at the post-fight presser.
