Matt Hughes vs. Matt Serra on May 23rd?

Matt Hughes and Matt Serra don't like each other. The two former UFC welterweight champions have been on a collision course for months and months. This much we all know.

The big question has been, when will they finally get to meet in the Octagon. Well, looks like we're getting pretty close to an answer. At least according to Hughes.

In a blog entry on his site on Friday night, Hughes said that it looks like a date has finally been hammered out to put the two in the cage:
Just got a call from Joe Silva and as of right now it looks like I’ll be fighting Matt Serra in Vegas on May 23rd. This is not 100% confirmed, but I believe it is going to be on this date.
As this obviously isn't a case of signed fight contracts, or anything like that, there's still a lot of time before May for plans to change... but it looks like fans can at least pencil in a target date for the "Battle fo the Matts."

^HAHAHA yea right you wish. Hughes is old, tired, and washed up. Matt Serra is going to literally school him and FINALLY shut hughes up and retire him. whoever thinks hughes can just walk threw anyone anymore is obviously not an mma fan... you do know elitexc folded right?!

I can't wait for Serra to put Hughes out to pasture, literally! I've met Hughes in person back in '02 and he is just like the a-hole he was on the TUF show, total jerk! I can't stand the guy! Go Serra!

Hughes is going to own serra as if he was a noob. serra sucks. it was the biggest fluke in mma history he beat gsp. lets go hughes lets go hughes hughes

Hey OctaCon, they are the same age. Not to mention Hughes is about 42-7 and Serra is something like 9-5. Do some math before you go shooting your mouth off.

lol OctaCon you know nothing. serra is nothing never was.. so on may 23rd you and serra can shut your holes....

Serra needs to fight in lightweight were he started and if anything all Huges has to do is lay on him for 15 mins and he wins but just like what he did to gracie he will beat sarra. I am not a fan of hughes and I do think he is a A-hole but the a-hole can fight and I will not lose to Serra and he will call it quits once he beat Serra to focus on team hit squard and building it up. It will be a good fight for both men win or lose and they will hug at the end of fight and all will be good with them because at the end of the day its just a pay check and we are all wrap up in the hype. I have never missed a UFC and I know a lot of you out there haven't either and will watch this one as well and hope that the matt that you like wins, but trust me these two guys at the end of the night will both have a smile on there faces becasue of the fat check they just got.

OctaCon must be a Matt Serra student or something.

Hughes beats him, Serra is the most overhyped one hit wonder out there. The guy hardly ever fights, gets beat constantly, only impressive victory he ever had besides GSP was beating Yves Edwards by a majority decision and squeking by Chris Lytle.

Hughes has been in the cage for sometime now but he and Serra are the same age and he as been doing this long then him. No saying serra is not a good fight becasue I know that he could very easy tap any one of us out in a min, but Hughes want's this bad he wants to go out with a bang and he wants to leave the ufc with a win. Huges won't let this fight go past the second round. Serra is great on the gound but huges is better and will be the best huges we all have seen in a coulpe of years but he will call it quites I do agree with that he does want to spend more time at home, he said that his kids are getting older and they want more of his time. He was only of the best 170's in the world and he will go down as beging great. Serra will lose drop to 155 get beat by Sean or BJ then drop out of sight his school will be doing great like it is right now and this time next year we won't even be talking about eaither one of them. Hughes tko 2min in the second. ref stoppage.

while i like both matt hughes and matt serra ...i believe matt serra will win....matt hughes is just like chuck liddell....that havent evolved as fighters .....i think matt is too full of himself and needs to change his game....he needs to work on stand up and get back to his normal lead foot...someone fooled him into believing he needs to stand as a "lefty"...come on Matt...evolve buddy...i want to see u win again...

While i like both Matt Hughes and Matt Serra...i believe Matt Serra will win....Matt Hughes is just like Chuck Liddell...neither has evolved as a fighter...i think both have huge egos which is stopping them. anyway...someone fooled matt hughes into believing that he needs to stand like a "lefty" to get his take down...while it makes sense...he making himself EVEN more predictable....he needs to work on his stand up..that will open up the take down for him...i want to see Matt hughes win again...but if he doesnt change...it is not going to happen...

Matt Hughes is not in his prime but he can still beat Matt Serra.

it is possible that hughes can beat serra....serra stands flat-footed and when u stand like that...ur going to get taken down.... but serra is heavy-handed and if he doesnt get taken down he will knock out hughes...hughes also needs to start distracting fighters with that kick to the head to set up the takedown like he use too....

that is me above about the flat-footed story...

Serra or Hughes please, most fans of mma have learned to hate hughes. The guy is one of the most arrogant a-holes. It is great to see someone like that to get there ass handed to him. remember his prefight interview to his second fight with gsp. he said he was way better on the ground. I think that fool really believed it. not just prefight bs. remember the whole serra deal came from the tuf when hughes was continuously making comments to gsp and the final thing telling gsp that he cant defend the basic armbar. that is when serra started defending gsp. said he was a nice guy and hughes was a dick and then it went on from there. he may have taken it too far but between the 2 it isn't even close Hughes is a monster dick

don't overlook Serra's pedigree...he's been called a "genius" in the world of BJJ...also, with all of the upsets lately (do I need to list them?) I think this fight screams for a Serra win.

honestly, I think both guys are pretty good...hughes obviously one of the greatest ever...in his prime...serra won some quality fights on tuf to get his title shot...and fluke or not, he ko'd gsp...both guys are on the lower end of the personality chart but that doesn't matter in the octagon...hughes by rnc, rd 2

Serra-edge: ju jitsu,heavy handed
Hughes-edge: experience, strength

Hughes is one dimensional. He has not evolved his game with everyone else. His pace and trying to control the fight is over. If Serra can land some quality shots in stand up he can set him up for some ground game. If Hughes wins it will be a tko by ground and pound. Serra by submission. I would hate to see this go to the judges. Serra's conditioning is not as well as Hughes. His motto "Serra's don't tap." will get a stoppage. Many different factors but in the end I hate to say it, but Hughes by tko ground and pound.
