Jason MacDonald Gets UFC Walking Papers, Looks Forward to Opportunities

Middleweight fighter Jason MacDonald got his walking papers (well, walking email) from the UFC this past weekend. It's obviously not something that he is relishing, but, ever the optimist, he is looking for opportunities in misfortune.

"The good news is I can go out there and win a few fights and hopefully be back in the UFC before the end of 2009," said MacDonald in his blog at sportsnet.ca on Monday.

"It also opens up some other opportunities for me. It's an opportunity for me to fight in the MFC and win that middleweight belt. I also wouldn't mind fighting in Strikeforce. They're looking for someone to fight Scott Smith. And I can beat Scott Smith. I'd also like to fight in Japan. I don't know if I'd want to make a career there, but I'd like the opportunity to do that."

Despite the UFC hosting more events than at any time in the promotion's history, there are also more fighters available than at any time in the sport's history. With the overabundance of talent, there's more pressure than ever for fighters to perform, and MacDonald is quite aware of the situation.

"The UFC has been great to me and they've been great to deal with, so there are no hard feelings at all. I understand it's just the nature of the sport," he wrote. "Especially nowadays, with so many fighters, it's more important than ever to win fights.

"I do my best to put on good fights, but I put on a horrible performance against Quarry. Had I gone out there and had a three-round war with him and had it been extremely exciting, I don't think I'd be in this position."

It is great to see a fighter who understand that it's business not personel. I happen to like JM but realized that this day might come after his last fight. Jason's outlook should be the standard for those who fall but have the fight and desire to continue to be their best. I look forward to seeing him in the UFC again.

Agreed. He's a class act.

Also agreed. Class act statements he made. Although I wasn't the biggest fan of Jason MacDonald, I have great respect for him. He was always ready for a match, it seem like he was on every other event so much respect goes out to him and wishing the best for him. Hopefully he'll get those wins under his belt and get to return if he could.

I don't care where he fights, the guy is a class act and I look forward to seeing his next appearance whether it be for Strikeforce, MFC, or an outfit out of Japan. Good luck out there J. Mac.

I'm calling Bullshit on this. Dana White was specifically asked after the fight if he knew if JM was going to be let go...he said No Way. This guy is an amazing fighter, and he always brings it. We love JM is what he said.

And that is a taped interview.

Had Dana not said that, they I would say yah...Let him go let him work his way back up like they have from many others. But to say one thing to make the canadian fans happy while he was there and then take it back...

Dana...Thats 100% opposite of JM...Hes a Class Act...Your a Class Asshole for letting this happen.

And I suppose you have done every single thing you have said in your life right?

I have done every single thing I have said in my life. It's called possessing honour. Maybe you've heard of that 'word'.

MacDonald's a game opponent. At the UFC 97 Post-Fight Conference Dana White said that MacDoanld was a tough guy and a tyope fighter who brings it and the type of fighter the UFC wants. Two loses in a row to two well-known middleweights...don't really understand why they let him go.

They release JM, but they've kept Houston Alexander too long

He beat and lost to some tough opponents in his run with the UFC. I have no doubt that he'll rack up a few wins and be back again.

Release Liddell with an e-mail... Oh, wait. Bros before Business even though it's just business.

I was bummed that he was relegated to the undercard. McDonald may not always win, but he always puts on an exciting fight.

Now getting cut... UFC doesn't always need 'winners' it needs exciting fighters. I'm sure he'll be back in the Octagon again.

Same thing happend to Jorge Gurgel, Joe Silva and Dana said Jorge wasnt going to get cut because hes been in 3 fight of the nights even though hes lost, he goes down swingin and steps up when they need somebody. If the UFC values "wins" so much then Anderson Silva did the right thing to coast his way against Leitis. Why risk anything when u can get the win wether its boring or not to Danas liking.
