UFC Middleweight Contender Chael Sonnen Tap Dances on Healthcare

Following his win over Nate Marquardt at UFC 109, Chael Sonnen put his MMA gloves down to get in a little work on his political chops.

Sonnen announced last week that he would seek political office.

"I have officially announced my candidacy for District 37 in Oregon for the House of Representatives," Sonnen told MMAWeekly.com.

Running as a Republican, the preliminary election for the seat takes place in May and the general election in November.

"(The position is) currently held by a Republican, and he's vacating the seat to run for the U.S. Fifth Congressional District," said Sonnen. "I was recruited by the party to fill his seat."

At Saturday night's post-fight press conference, while most questions centered on fighting, Top 10 rankings, and title shots, Sonnen had to field a question about the controversial health care bill currently sitting before the federal government.

"I'll tell you, it's a big bill. It's a federal bill. I'm just a state guy. I'm running for State Representative in Oregon, so I'm going to be a politician and dance around your question a little bit. It's a big bill and nobody fully understands it," he commented.

"I'm running as a Republican, but the one thing the president says that I really like, he comes out and tells the GOP, 'If you've got a better idea, bring it to me.' And the GOP hasn't done that. That's the side I'm on. It creates a frustration. There's still more dialog that needs to be done on that topic."

He did a little politico tap dancing, but whattaya think Oregon, is Sonnen gonna make it to your House?

Chael deserves everything he is getting right now. This guy has been working hard for years and nobody thought he could beat Nate.However.....He said some harsh stuff about Silva, and as much as like Vitor, i just don't see him beating Silva. So Chael go ahead and get ready for your second career, I see Anderson giving you a major BEATING!!!!

you must be dumb to make that statement because silva hasnt beaten Vitor yet

Good luck to you Chael. and about his recent trash talking... I think it can be good for the sport to help promote a fight the way he has. and also he did back up with words with an impressive win over a very tough nate marquart. I think because of Chaels style he matches up very well against anderson and has a very real chance of taking it from him... if Anderson can get past Vitor Belfort.. I think a lot of people dont give Vitor enough credit. he has fast hands and good power. He might be too much for Anderson.

Chael is tuff and Vitor does have a chance at beating Slva, but if Anderson and Chael meet, i do agree that Anderson will give Chael a good beating. Yeah trash talk will always be good for the sport, but chael got a bit racist with his.

who cares? fuck brazilians...they are the ones who hate americans so much....I agree with Chael, Anderson comes across as a homo

looks like Vitor's chances of beating Silva just took a serious hit

Yes sir!!!! Chael is about to eat some humble pie!! You can be ignorant and call Anderson a homo all you want, but he is going to hurt the politician!!

If Chael politics the way he fights then nothing good will come of it. Does anyone actually get excited when he fights. He fights and I have to watch it on fast forward.....boring. As a politician he probably can get anything he wants passed. He'll just bore them to into a coma.

Dear Rob Hunter:

I understand exactly what you are saying. Chael Sonnen is a boring fighter. He has no intricate submission moves. He has no knockout power. He wins through unanimous decision.

I personally gave no respect to this guy because he is from WEC and not Pride or UFC. He was a champion (controversial) at a second rate organization. And he beat a drugged out Filho who has the potential to be #2 in the world.

But I think Sonnen does have a chance against A. Silva. He won't knock him out. NO WAY. He won't submit him. Sonnen does not have sneaky BJJ techniques like some of the japanese cans that beat Silva.

But if he takes Silva down, lays on top of him for 5 rounds, and throws rabbit punches, he might pull out a unanimous decision (or split).

I am always up for a change. And Silva has been too dominant for too long. GSP, Silva, and Penn have overshadowed too many people in their respective relatively unpopular divisions.

MW, WW, and LW only has few superstars. And asides from the champions, the fighters get paid shit. It's not like the LHW or HW division where you can be #5 and still make $150k.

Chael Sonnen has proven that he is tough. And he was a rightful contender to Filho. He is currently the rightful contender to Silva.

Anderson is not a douche. He is just little cocky/confident.

Ask yourself this question. If Tito or Mir had that much dominance, what do you think they would do? They would shit talk 24/7, make their own MMA magazines to talk more shit, and go home at night to talk even more shit.

You have to understand that Anderson, like Fedor, GSP, and Penn, is acceptably cocky. Every dominant champ is cocky. That is how they psych out their opponents and remain champions. They put fears in other fighters even before stepping in the ring.

Fedor has that "I am a humble guy" type of cockiness. And his unbelievable calmness and composure scares the shit out of his opponents.

Anderson has "I am Anderson Silva the GOD of MMA..I can play around and KO anyone" type of cockiness. And YES... His opponents can't even attack him when he stares right at them. Just go ask Thales Leites if he was shitting in his pants when Silva started screaming at him during the fight.

Tito is a pathetic douche. Mir is a semi-douche. Anderson is just a confident guy.

Agreed. Except Tito and Mir all UFC champions weren't that cocky. Even Chuck Liddell, who was on fire for 3 years, knew how to respect his opponents and not let his dominance get to his head.

when chuck was champ, every pre fight interview ended with " I'm gonna knock him out in the first round"...yeah, lots of respect there
