During a media teleconference for Diego Sanchez's lightweight debut against Joe Stevenson at UFC 95 in London, a reporter asked Stevenson who he thought would win in an expected bout between Kenny Florian and BJ Penn.
Stevenson chose Penn--not too surprising given his admiration for "The Prodigy." But he incorrectly assumed Sanchez would mirror his pick.
Sanchez had something else in mind.
"After seeing BJ's performance against St. Pierre, man, I'd say it's a bad time for him to fight anybody right now," Sanchez said. "Man, that guy has zero cardio—and he goes into the biggest fight of his life with that type of cardio and endurance? I've never gotten tired in a UFC fight. I've never gotten caught tired in a fight. And to see this guy be that exhausted after one round? I know GSP is tough, but c’mon. He burned himself out in the first round just defending those takedowns."
But that wasn't all. He gave Florian more than a fighting chance.
"I think its a bad time for him to fight Kenny Florian," he continued. "As long as Kenny Florian lasts past the first, second round, I think he's going to take over with conditioning. I don't care how talented you are. If you don't have gas in the tank—if the Ferrari doesn’t have the gas in the tank, it ain't going to finish the quarter mile, and that's the bottom line."
Stevenson chimed in quickly.
"You make a good point, dude," he said. "I didn't even think about that."

Penn controlled that fight, same with the Sean Sherk set his own pace. Against GSP he wasn't given that option.

Very naive Ryan..You think BJ would dismantle Diego..think again buddy..for sure BJ needs to work on his cardio instead of vacationing on his most important fight..i can assure you one thing..he will not be champion by the end of the year..either Diego or Florian will be lightweight champ..
diegos game is the ground... he wont win against bj there... he also doesnt have the size advantage that gsp does...florians only hope is to dance around the ring ala roger huerta... bj has one bad fight against one of the worlds 3 best and everyone automatically disqualifies him... dont forget that gsp is still under investigation for greasgate... something that several fighters have all commented on...
Stevenson has been punched in the head one too many times.....he'll be cut from UFC after he drops this one and the next. Kenny F will have his hands full with BJ, but I'd put my money on Kenny. BJ is a lazy, rich kid. Kenny is tough as nails and has great coaching and training partners.....
Kenny lost a close decision to Sherk. BJ demolished Sherk to get the belt. Let's not underestimate BJ because of a bad fight against probably one of the best pound for pound fighters in the world GSP. Besides what happened to Diego's ultimate cardio against Koschek?
That's the problem when a guy gets owned so badly. People think differently of BJ just because of this welterweight domination by GSP. BJ is the clear champ at 155. I don't think Diego can beat him and would like to see the KenFlo fight but would still call BJ as the winner. BJ is the man at 155.

If Diego thinks his cardio is so great why has'nt he made his way to the top of the 170 lb class to fight GSP? I love BJ Penn, but I think Diego or Kenny can beat Bj just for the fact that u never know if BJ can last more than a couple rounds, we know Diego or Kenny can.

BJ still has a lot to prove I saw the old BJ not the Ultimate Fighter Finale, UFC 80, and UFC 84 BJ at UFC 94. I know he was trying to gain weight for the GSP fight but that fat around his stomach wouldnt have been there if his cardio was where it needed to be.
As for the Diego/Koscheck fight didnt he have a staph infection leading up to the fight?
The Florian/Sherk fight was whack! you cant compare Penn/Sherk for that. Sherk tried one take down with BJ with Florian he took him down the whole fight. I'd like to see Sherk try to stand with Kenny the way he stood with Penn. He would get owned!

6 of 19 fights BJ has been in, have been by decision. The last time he had proven that he can go the distance was 2005, when he lost to GSP the first time. He has been in 4 decisions since 2004, and lost twice. All I'm saying is, if he is looking gassed out after early stoppages or knockouts (referencing Stevenson and Sherk) then it's even worse if the fight goes to the third or dare I say 4/5th rounds. You can't do shit right when you can't breathe.
Even BJ fans know this. He is shit lazy and has even said HIMSELF that he relies on natural, raw talent and needs to immensely work on cardio.

P.S. I'm a BJ fan, but GSP would own him again. He is more complete. Why did he win? His wrestling? Yes. His lead jab? Yes. Takedowns? Yes. BUT MOST OF ALL his cardio. He was able to press early and often 100% of the time because of that.
