Matt Hughes Calls on the Opposition to Train for Serra

Matt Hughes and Matt Serra are fighting at UFC 98 next week, and Hughes appears to be taking the fight very seriously.

It's been basically a year since either has fought, and both are coming off of losses. Hughes enters the bout off of a devastating flying knee from Thiago Alves, which followed his second loss to Georges St. Pierre. Serra faces Hughes after losing his rematch with St. Pierre at the Bell Centre in Montreal.

As the time for UFC 98 draws near, Hughes has branched out of the confines of his H.I.T. Squad gym. In a post on his official blog, he indicated that not only has he sought out a familiar face in former teammate Jeremy Horn, but he also traveled to Minnesota to train with former opponent Sean Sherk.

Last week, Matt Pena and I went up and trained with Sean Sherk and several other fighters at Greg Nelson's Minnesota Martial Arts Academy. We were there from Monday through Saturday afternoon. I had a great training session and also a good time. One thing about that gym is that they've got some tough guys in there. No wonder Sean has done as good as he has. The week before that, I was in Salt Lake City training with Jeremy Horn.

Hughes and Sherk fought at UFC 42 several years ago. Sherk lost his bid to take the UFC welterweight title away from Hughes, but took him the duration of their five-round championship bout.

None his "branching out" is gonna matter. This fight comes down to whether Hughes can repeatedly score takedowns and control Serra en route to a decision. That's the only way Hughes wins this fight.

I agree Hughes has been fighting so long now it would be hard for him to change much. If Serra can defend the take downs and let his hands go I see it being a short fight with Serra winning via TKO. If Hughes is able to take Serra down and control him he should be able to ground and pound out a decision. Hughes will have to be cautious though as Serra has a strong submission game.

I think you all forget about how good Hughes is. Other than his losses to GSP & Alves you haven't seen him lose in a long time. Serra seems like the kind of guy that most people would want to hang out with but has little chance of taking home a win. He got his punchers chance last time against GSP I doubt lightning will struck twice! Think about the way they have both matched up agains similar opponent n the past.

Hughes will take Serra down at the start and rough him up a little bit. Serra will be gassed by the second round and won't be able to defend a takedown or utilize his submission game offensively. Hughes by decision whether he trains with Sherk or stays at HIT.

I agree. Serra comes out and gets taken down in the first round. Gasses defending positions and defense and by the second round is worthless. I don't think that serra really stands a chance especially because his cardio is terrible

What he (hughes) should do is rub vaseline all over his body like GSP. Then serra would have no hope of hooking a submission and matt can use his ground and pound to win. Then he can give a retarted fake ass speech for the camera and say "This will be my toughest fight to date."

Maybe he can do it and try to sound like a robot on smack wearing spandex, like George.

I guess I'm odd for missing the hughes days when we had a real world champion who

A. didnt cheat to win.
b . Didnt act like a fake ass robot without a personality.
c. Said what he thought and didnt care what a bunch of internet warriors thought, who only know him from a edited version of the ultimate fighter.

Gsp fans are stupid and they go beyond nutt hugging. Words cant describe what they are without getting banned.

Lets just say if GSP asked

most would be on there knees... and it wouldnt be for prayin he wins his next fight.

Matt Hughes doesn't have a chance against Matt Serra, he'll most likely get KO'ed or submitted in the first round. Hughes was a dominant champion, but besides Hayato Sakurai, he's never beat a perennial top ten 170 lb fighter.

I guess GSP isn't a "perennial top ten 170 lb fighter"......

I guess Penn, Sherk, Gracie, Trigg, Newton and every person he fought when he was the reigning what 5-7 time world champ wern't top tier fighters. Really other than the shock loss to Penn he was the most dominant fighter in UFC history. He will beat Serra because neither of them has evolved. I believe Serra has won 1 fight by KO we all know it was simply his night. ANY betting man would put the money on Hughes.

i hope they both lose.
