CBS Exec Says Jake Shields Is Still Marketable

Message boards around the MMA world savaged Jake Shields after his decision victory over Jason "Mayhem" Miller at Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Rogers on Saturday.

The hater consensus was that Shields was a boring fighter and had erased the popularity he had earned over a 10-year career as one of the world's top non-UFC welterweights (and newly minted middleweight).

But CBS Primetime exec Kelly Kahl on Sunday said that's just not the case.

"I don't know who those people are," he said. "Look, he's the champion and he did what it took to win a championship belt. I'm not going to fault him for that.

"Was it as exciting as some matches? Probably not, but the guy did what he had to do to win the bout."

Kahl said there were "a lot of moving parts" to Strikeforce's next show on CBS, but was pleased overall with the way the first effort turned out.

I completely agree with Kelly. Jake is somewhat of a boring fighter, meaning he is somewhat safe... but that's not a bad thing. I mean Mayhem is no slouch. why should jake try to stand with him? That's nuts. And they were both changing positions and getting mount on a very regular basis. From where I was sitting I didn't see jake just laying on miller. And let's be real... i'm really quite tired of people coming down on this. NOT every fight is going to end with a KO or submission.

Strikeforce is stuck with a boring champ. Of course they are going to try to sell him. He's a blanket and that fight on Saturday was 5 rounds of pure hell. I wish Mayhem would have had a few more seconds to finish that choke. Shieldzzzzzzzzz

I thought it was a pretty exciting fight from a grappling standpoint. People who think it was boring don't understand grappling.

wow these people who said shields was putting on are boring fight are idiots, i'm a fan of both shields and miller so i was excited for this fight, am i mad that it wasnt a ko or submission, nope, miller was really close to ending the fight at the end of the 3rd round and shields wasnt just blanketing miller for the fight, he was consistently improving his position, gained mount many times and also gained miller's back multiple times, yes he didnt finish him or do that much from those positions but he did what he had to do to win the title from a very dangerous fighter in jason miller.

i completely agree with you lxian, it was a great fight from a grappling standpoint, many transitions, very entertaining escapes by mayhem and much more, people who think this fight is boring should just go back to watching boxing if they want only standup and that is all they understand.

I'm with Ixian on this. This was far from a boring fight. MMA is not all standup.
I loved some of the attempts, passes, transitions and the fact that we got to watch two very skilled ground guys show off their moves. Not having a KO is not always bad. Sometimes you get to see what a guy has learned from fight to fight and not just that he's been benching.

Mayham.. no kicks buddy.. he wants to take you down. let the hands fly and be ready to sprawl. :(

I actually thought the fight was awesome...seemed like a good mma clinic to me...some standup...lots of rolling...sweet transitions and escapes...it WAS a little irritating that Jake seemed like he was looking for a decision victory but thats how some people gameplan...great card all together though...lets see how they can do without fedor on the card

Agreed with everyone here. Really enjoyed this fight and the entire card.
