Josh Thomson's Toe Jam

Strikeforce lightweight champion Josh "The Punk" Thomson had to bow out of a title defense against Yves Edwards at "Destruction" on Nov. 22 due to an injured toe. Almost a month later, the toe in question ain't doing any better.

"For some reason, I still can't run, I can't do cardio, I can't do anything right now," he tells MMAInsider. "I can't ride a bike...you have to push on the balls of your feet. I can't do anything that causes my big toe to bend."

In short, Thomson is one step away from being an invalid.

"It's horrible; I'm fat," he jokes. "I don't seem to have a problem eating."

Thomson is doing rehab on the injury twice a day, and his doctor has worked out the scar tissue that had built up in the digit. If it doesn't get better in two weeks, he says an anticipated February return for Strikeforce is off the table. He will, however, get on their card tentatively scheduled for March in San Jose.

"Even if I have to find a way to shoot up my toe or something," he stresses.

One thing Thomson is getting accomplished: shopping. Drive to a mall in San Jose, Calif., and you just might find him there.

"With the holidays, there's plenty of things to do."
