GSP Doesn't Rule Out Breathing Techniques For Alves

The breathing techniques employed by GSP cornerman Phil Nurse--and taught by holistic healer Steven Friend--set off a three-month controversy beat to death by conspiracy theorists who believed the welterweight champion was cheating.

In May, the Nevada State Athletic Commission essentially put an end to the saga, taking no formal action against GSP or his cornermen for the incident at UFC 94 known as "Greasegate."

Shortly after the controversy, the UFC amended its rules for cornerman to prohibit the application of Vaseline by anyone other than a UFC-approved cutman.

You'd think GSP might avoid the technique--a rubbing of hands over the chest and back--in future competitions, but the champ didn't rule it out for his fight with Thiago Alves at UFC 100.

"I don't know about this, but maybe," he said. "We'll see. I know in this fight, they're going to check us a lot, and I'm all for this. I never cheat in my life. I'm a proud champion and I want to win fair and square.

"I'm not the only one who has done the breathing technique before. But it's not going to change the result of the fight, with or without it."

Anyone who saw the video knows he cheated, there was no "breathing technique" his corner man rubbed vasoline on his brow, then his jaw line. He made 2 quick rubs on his chest and quickly went back to his rubbing face. Did it make a different, probably not but only because he got caught cheating and they wiped him off right then and between every round.

You're a freaking idiot. There was absolutely no cheating at all. All I saw was BJ Penn get absolutely destroyed by GSP. BJ is a joke and Kenny Florian is going to prove it.

if you watch the Silva Leites fight, Anderson had a what would be "significant"(according to the pro greasegaters) amount of vaseline on his brow as applied before the fight. as he is pacing the octagon before the first round he his rubbing his face and then immediately and clearly rubbing his shoulders and torso...certainly enough of this "grease" had migrated without any contact from the act of fighting, to warrant suspicion according to grease gate logic.. does this constitute a concious effort to cheat and neutralize the ground game of Leites?

rofl owned! im no big gsp fan, and at first i thought there might be something to it, but im am consistently amazed at the bj nuthuggery that is so evident in the media and online. and i just dont get it! he has been exposed as an underachieving fighter with an ego bigger than tito's! he is great at lightweight, no argument there, but to say anything else about "greasegate" really just makes bj's fan looks worse and worse.

Your joking, GSP completly dominated Pen, I can't wait till the next pen fight Florian will teach him a few things. I hope he is shape this time

I completely agree with the Silva comment. Right in front of the camera Anderson was wiping the vaseline from his face all over his shoulders and chest. I'm sure many others do it as well. People should stop trying to discredit St. Pierre's performance. He was awsome.

GSP is a cheater. Anyone who thinks differently is an idiot. People like Penn, Hughes, Serra, and others don't complain for the heck of it. They all said GSP is greasy. GSP was cheating even before greasing. He is a juicer. Look at all the people who say Alves is on roids. I totally agree. Now realize that GSP and Alves are with in 5 pounds of each during fight time. They are both huge for the 170 pound division.

"People like Penn, Hughes, Serra, and others don't complain for the heck of it."

LOL what are you smoking there buddy? Penn is notorious for being a whiner, Hughes is bitter over getting creamed twice (oh but GSP didn't grease when Hughes beat him by his own admission) and GSP could have been wearing a gi against Serra and still dominated him.

The ONLY respectful opponent of GSP lately was Fitch who had nothing but the utmost respect to admit that he got his ass handed to him and rightfully so.

As for the juicing? C'mon buddy, GSP has always tested clean, come up with some PROOF before spouting off such nonsense. Silva as shown, blatantly cheated with greasing and not ONE WORD was uttered, of course the ref saw it and he was wiped down but he still did it didn't he? What's the difference there, the intent was clearly there, should Silva not be subject to an investigation.

I can't wait for GSP/Penn 3 where GSP will finally shut this whole argument, you know it's going to happen and it'll be the same as Ortiz/Shamrock 3, PUNISHING him into retirement.

You guys must not have seen the video of his trainer putting the grease on him and are just blindly believing GSP which would make you GSP nut huggers. I'm actually a GSP fan, but what I saw was extremely suspicious. He clearly and intentionally rubbed grease on GSPs chest and the way he did it made it seem as though he was trying to be sneaky about it. You guys obviously have access to the internet, look it up.

i saw the grease-gate video and weather or not it was intentional doesnt disregard the fact that he was rubbed with vasaline on his shoulders and chest, and anyone who bjj player will tell you that to escape a high guard, especially from someone as good as bj you need to do more then just shimmy your way out of it. i love bj and gsp but theres no escaping that he was rubbed down with it. im not saying he did it on purpose it just happened.

GSP > Bj Penn

There is way to much nutt hugging going on in this thread.. so I'm gonna state some facts.

1. People say George would of won the fight regardless? BJ is a BJJ WORLD CHAMPION, by greasing (it's on tape -- come on guys I know some of you love george but give me a break.) by greasing your removing his BEST WEAPON!! THAT is going to make a HUGE difference in the fight.

Think if there was a way were anderson silva couldnt use his striking or Lesnor or Couture couldnt use there wrestling. Are you gonna claim it wouldnt make a difference? It made a huge difference, if it didnt the UFC wouldnt have changed there rules.

AS for the comments about matt hughes....
Lets get this straight, some of you on here are willing to buy the "I was fighting my idol excuse." But think Hughes is pissed cause he got "creamed" twice even though George is ON TAPE doing what he did. How long did it take for to convince yourself that, that is true and your not nutt hugging? Dont let your feelings for your favorite fighter blind you.

2. True John Fitch didnt speak out-- He was on the outs with the ufc at the time thats probably why. But his BJJ coach named Dave camerillo and Cesar Gracie both did and said Team Jackson has been doing this for awhile. So please keep that in mind.

3. Silva did rub Vaseline on his chest (100% True... so you can see I'm not nutt hugging in this thread.) He was warming up in the cage and I dont think he relized it. But did it make a differenace in there fight? Because Lietes kept pulling gaurd and Anderson kept it standing, not really.

GSP on the other hand tryed like hell to get BJ down in the first round... He couldnt do it( he was even grabbing his trunks like he did against KOS). After greasing he finaly could and anyone who know anything about BJJ (I have trained in BJJ and Sambo) will tell you what GEorge was doing was not a pass for a high rubber guard. If anything George was in constant threat of being hooked in a triangle choke.

Take a bjj class and you will learn that yes george did cheat and yes it did make a differnece.

No amount of vaseline would cause BJ Penn to get an asswhooping as he did at UFC 94.

BJ was humiliated and just looked for an excuse to hold on too. Kenny will strip him of the belt he doesn't deserve.

I think the whole point of the greasing was like the guy above previously stated.. George was escaping the rubber guard too damn easily, sweat?? please!

Also Thales's corner told the ref, who told the commision(i.e. guy standing in suit next to each fighter) to wipe him off, they did and asked Thales's corner if it was good enough.. They said !YES!

Take a BJJ class Nick cause you dont know what your talking about.

A rule is a rule, whether it was intentional (which i think it was) should not matter. We see fighters sometimes take illegal substances and flunk tests. However, i never hear anyone say give him a pass because it was not taken intentional. For all the morons who say it would not help GSP are short bus riding slobbering morons.
