Will Hendo vs. Franklin II Hold as UFC 103 Main Event?

New Twitter devotee Rich Franklin relayed a curious thing Saturday morning: his re-match with Dan Henderson had been taken off the event description for UFC 103 on Sept. 19 in Dallas.

"Ive heard the ufc pulled my fight off the website for 103," tweeted Franklin. "I don't kno y. They hvnt spoken to me @ this, n i assume the fight is still on."

Grammar issues aside, the message seemed to be a red flag--the UFC was backing away from the match-up, which had drawn almost unanimous criticism from fans on internet sounding boards.

During a Friday radio appearance on ESPN 1100 for The Caring Place cancer support center, UFC president Dana White hinted there were more changes in store for the Dallas event.

"My job is to put on fights that the fans want to see," he chortled. "Hang, tight, stick around. Stay tuned."

Two things could lend credence to a new main event for UFC 103: White's make-up with Tito Ortiz, which he announced via a tweet on Friday, and the dearth of talent influx from Affliction's collapse the same day.

Is Franklin/Hendo II on ice? And is that a good thing?

We just watched this fight. It's no more interesting than Tito vs. Shamrock 3. I'll save my $50 for the next one.

thats what im thinking...

I love Hendo, but I agree with the other comments, we just saw this, and well...I dont want to see it again. That card is going to suck! Probably save my money too

Yup, passing on UFC 103, even if they replace the main event.

UFC 103 has the potential to shape the future of the company in a big way.

The heavyweight division is so poor that a Cro Cop loss to Dos Santos would mean another "contender" to Lesnar.

Swick/Kampmann is for the next shot at GSP.

Trigg beating Koscheck is a big feather in his cap if it happens, something the UFC can instantly capitalize on. Koscheck winning just strengthens an already marketable property.

You jokers are so far off, it's not even funny...a great example of why the UFC has to get rid of great split decision rematch idea and replace it with something like Tito versus anybody.

Yea, this rematch is completely outrageous especially since Hendo should be fighting Silva next. Why give a title shot to Bisping but not Hendo for winning the fight. The card doesn't look that great, and remember its gonna compete with Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr. the same night on PPV. That show also features Chris John vs. Rocky Juarez & Zab Judah vs. Matt Hatton, which is a pretty decent undercard. Not saying Floyd will sell better than the UFC, but a chance to see Floyd lose will.

Chuck vs Tito 3
what a way to welcome Tito back
having Chuck knock his arse out again

Hendo should definitely fight Anderson Silva next at 185. He is the only 185 lb fighter who has a real hope of beating him. I thought the rematch with Franklin who fights at 205 now was pointless.

i disagree that this card is going to "suck" i think its deeper than 101 for sure and maybe 102. i think those two have much higher profile main events but for quanitity 103 is deep. 6 lw's sorting out the pecking order a WW #1 conteners match, Cro crop!!!, either in a return to glory or a new contender in dos santos and if the rumors are true for the main event, franklin vs tito, hendo vs vitor (or some combo) this card will be badass!!!

You guys are forgetting a big thing. Affliction folded the other day... with a possible influx of talent from that show. Belfort wants a rematch with Hendo. That'll be an exciting match. Rich/Tito would sell well since.. well... everyone wants to see Tito fight regardless of whether he wins or not. Crocop/Dos Santos will be an all out war since these are two excellent standup guys. I think people are severely underestimating how good this card will be. Go ahead and save your money if you want, but don't complain when you miss some good fights.

Wasn't Franklin a Teacher? His grammar is turrible

Math teacher.

I Dont want to watch this for the main even let alone a PPV.. It wasnt that great the 1st time either.

this fight would be okay as a com-main event. hendo should of won by unanimous decision. and he deserves a title shot anyway. i think 103 will be a good ppv. the undercard is stacked too.

I think its obvious its gonna be Tito Ortiz vs. Rich Franklin.

I think Franklin's grammar was so bad cause he was texting it from his phone.

Franklin vs. Tito and Hendo vs. Belfort would be much better fights

BTW, this is going to be a sick card if those fights happen.

I LOVE THIS IDEA!!!

dude, both of those guys are legends and they are not getting any younger.

they had a GREAT FIGHT but at the end it seemed franklin had more in the tank and if it went another round it looked like franklin could take it..

I SAY GREAT IDEA AND I WILL DEFINITLY WATCH THIS FIGHT AGAIN CAUSE THE LAST ONE LEFT ME HANGING AND I WANT TO SEE A KNOCK OUT!!!

This fight isnt what the fans want to see. We are spoiled as we live in a time where UFC is on a roll and has the capability to put on amazing fights. If it was 5 years ago this fight would have been a main event anywhere in the world.

I think UFC 102 is a better card than UFC 103, more intriguing match ups, in my humble opinion.

Hendo vs. Franklin is NEVER a main event unless one is the Middleweight Champion. Plus these mixed weight class fights are POINTLESS! Franklin is now a 205'er and Hendo should stay a 185'er. UFC should really do a title fight every PPV, or if they can't its gotta be a really good fight.

Dude, bottom line, and this was already mentioned but if they haven't had discussions about belfort vs. hendo for a title fight for the 185 winner and franklin vs ortiz at 210 then i would be suprised. . .add those two fights to the other fights on the card and you have yourself a great card. . . if ortiz comes back, hell, throw him in against another ufc opponents, jones...and you have one of the best cards of the year, ortiz, franklin, hendo, belfort, cro-crop, kosh, trigg, and on and on. . .there would be no less than three UFC hall of famers and a boatload of upcoming talent. . . though, i think in the end they save ortiz for ufc 104/ufc105. . .but what the hell were they thinking when they made this fight anyway??? i mean, they normally don't misread the public THAT BADLY!!!

i will be donating my money, regardless of the card, just like i always do. i enjoy all fights, some just more than others. and the cards i've been the least interested in on paper have proved me way wrong before. that, and i will put my money on mma's side vs floyd mayweather any day. f boxing.

WHA@@@@T?!? People think UFC 103 is going 2 suck? LOL ya sure & UFC 102 is full of amazing fights I wanna C (wink wink/sarcasm) There r only 2 fights I want 2 C on the 102 card & thats the main event (Couture VS Nogueira) & so-main event (Jardine VS Thiago Silva) & everything else is ZZZzzzZZZ.

What I dont get is alot of u people paid 2 C Chuck VS Ortiz 2X & Ortiz VS Shamrock X3. WTF? but u dont want 2 C Hendo VS Franklin 2I think Rich won the 1st fight, so y not have "round 2"? If it was a boring 1st fight then yes do not have a 2nd, but what was wrong with the 1st one (compared to alot of 1st &/or even 2nd fights)? NOTHING. Regardless if Hendo & Rich 2 happens on the 103 card, there r alot of good fights on the 103, especially compared 2 UFC 102

The reason HENDO doesnt get a crack @ Silvas title is b/c the winner of Maia VS Marquardt gets the next crack @ Silva. I think Wanderlei VS Hendo would b a good fight & the winner fights Anderson or the winner of Anderson VS Nate/Maia. Dont get me wrong if Wanderlei VS Hendo does happen it cant b Wanderlei's 1st fight @ MW. I think Wanderlei needs 1 or 2fights b4 a possible title shot or #1 contender & not 2 pull a BJ Penn (1st fight @ WW in yrs & gets a title shot b/c of who he is, which = bull shit)

I live in the Dallas area and got tickets to 103 before I knew who Franklin would be fighting. When It was Hendo I was a little annoyed at first but got on board. It was pretty much a guaranteed knockout.

If I knew Affliction folding would have the UFC fucking with the card again I might not have been so happy. I have no desire to see Tito Ortiz. I would rather watch another B.S. decision win by Hendo than that blonde haired jackass in the Octagon.

Anonymous said...

Hendo and Franklin need to fight again because the first one was too close, but it can wait. Ortiz vs Franklin, Hendo vs. Belfort 2 would be great fights and give the card a massive lift in interest.

Unknown said...

I think they should get together a Matt Hamill vs. Tito Ortiz fight. Tito should have to work his way back up like the rest of the guys coming to the UFC. He hasn't been too impressive in his last few fights, and this would give Matt Hamill a chance to show whether he is as good has he often looks. If Franklin wants to stay at Middleweight, I want to see him fight Akiyama!!!

man i cant believe some people are saying they're going to pass on this card this card is shaping out to be amazing swick kampmann...GREAT!! lightweight matches..this has potential to be one of the best cards in a little while even though there is no huge headlining match "yet"...

as far as franklin hendo 2 i mean that is a great matchup, and i did have franklin winning maybe cause im a little more partial to muay thai i don't no i just felt he controlled the fight more...but that was a great first fight they had and i would like to see that rematch again someday maybe just not this soon...

UFC 103 has some potential. Let's hope the main event is a superb match up considering a so-so supporting cast of fights.

They should resurrect Belfort vs. Santiago from Affliction's canceled card.

Tito Ortiz vs. Houston Alexander or Luis Cane could be a nice filler to headline.

And still I have to question about setting down 50. I may have to take my ass over to Wild Wings for the PPV

Anyways, here's a peep:

Swick vs. Kampmann- could've been a headliner for a UFC Fight Night...pick any night

Trigg vs. Koschek- Intriguing but thoughts of stalemate action come to mind...cuz Kos is gonna throw and Trigg is gonna clinch!

Cro Cop vs. Dos Santos- Sweet and relevant to the heavyweight division.

Hermes Franca vs. Tyson Griffin- Haven't we been there before? Decision on lockdown!

How about in a dream world Dana makes the off and on again rumors true and signs Fedor to fight Brock at the Dallas event...Now that would be something...
